The Secret Lunch with Laura

by Jeff McNeil

Memphis LogoThe game is a foot.  I have just returned from lunch with Laura, Jenn’s friend who is going to assist me in planning and carrying out the proposal.  She is totally on board with the general idea of the proposal and is going to get her boyfriend James involved as a photographer for me.  The date is set for June 19th for Jenn and Laura to take a limo around OC and LA shopping and getting new clothes for dinner and dancing later that night.  All is going according to plan so far.  I have reserved 3 nights at the Hotel Angeleno just in case Sarah, Jenn’s sister, has her baby earlier than June 24th.  So if the plans fall through on June 19th, then i have June 24th and then July 3rd.  I have even negotiated with a limo company to wave cancellation fees if i agree to book with them the following weekend for the same thing.  I am getting excited about all of this and the only thing Laura and I have to do is come up with the white lies to get Jenn to agree to go on the outing and spend my money.  Hard to do, lying to Jenn.  She is so sharp she always knows when something is up so I will have to put my game face on for all of this.  Let the games begin!

Hotel Angeleno convention blocking my plans

by Jeff McNeil

Well I attempted to get a date for the proposal confirmed at the Hotel Angeleno.  However I was unable to because they are 100% booked for that night.  So I reserved the following night.  I sure how that Jenn’s sister Sarah doesn’t have her baby early so that I can do this before the whole baby born thing.  I want to not have to go up to San Jose twice, once fot the baby and the second time for the engagement announcement. I am getting worried about when I can propose.  I hope Laura finishes school soon so that I can contact her about how to get this set up.

Legoland a bust

by Jeff McNeil

legoland_california_entranceSo this last Saturday I attempted to get some very unique gifts for Jenn at Legoland.  I left the house at 8am on Saturday morning.  It took me a little over an hour to get there and then I had to wait until 10am when the park opened.  I went to guest services to get my 1 hour shopping pass and then ran into the back of the park to the Brick Club.  The website said you could build anything with all the Lego pieces ever made there.  Surprise, they only had about 10 different blocks in 10 different colors.  Not every Lego ever made. I was sad and had to buy a $30 set to get my parking fee refunded.  (I will later return the set to get my $30 back).  So I was defeated, my brilliant and exciting surprise for Jenn has been set back a few steps.  I hurried home to see if I could download the Lego online builder and perhaps they had the parts I wanted.  No luck…. guess what… same pieces as Legoland.  I was however able to find a website that sells the pieces I want, but they will be coming from all over the globe and will cost a bit I feel. I am not giving up, going to keep searching.

Now there are 2 planning the proposal

by Jeff McNeil

Laura_MagoonYesterday afternoon I contacted on of Jenn’s good friends, Laura.  She was on her way home from Ventura when we talked about exactly how we want to coordinate the proposal event.  She had some ideas about exactly how to get Jenn out of the house for the day.  I think things will work out great now that I have a partner in crime.  Many thanks to Laura for her help and enthusiasm thus far.  I am not going to be able to pull this off without her.

Laura told me that Jenn and her were planning on doing something after Laura was done with med school finals in late May.  This could work out to my benefit with planning the proposal.  Laura and Jenn can go shopping and then to dinner/dancing.  Little would Jenn know that the dinner was at West with a wedding proposal. Laura and I continue to plan and I wish her luck on finals in the coming weeks.

Custom made ring box

by Jeff McNeil

irish celtic knot boxSo this whole week, after getting the OK from her mom, I have been looking into exactly how to make this proposal stand out.  I have come across a website that makes custom image and color boxes.  I think this might be just what I have been looking for.  I think I want to get something special for the ring box for Jenn, Christmas ornament for me, fridge magnet for Marge and something for Jenn’s friend Laura.  I think I can purchase all of these gifts with the same theme on them.  I have been thinking of a Celtic knot with a galaxy blue background. For those who don’t know Jenn is Irish and likes a little Irish flare here and there and I love everything sci-fi so the galaxy color name suits me just fine.  Now to order all this with an engraved date, still unknown, and some meaningful message, again unknown.  Note: the image shown is not the box I will be getting, it is a larger jewelry box on the site, however it does show the Celtic knots and the galaxy blue is a shimmer of blue an purple.  Here is the website.  http://www.kyledesigns.com/

OMG! Lego wedding rings!

Lego Ring

Lego Ring

This is so cool! Imagine having a Lego brick plate on you at all times.  I know I am totally geeking out but this would be so awesome for the die hard Lego fan.  However, this is not for me since I would not want something I could change each week as my wedding band, but it would be a fun ring to have for those uber geeks.

Building a website in secret

by Jeff McNeil

SecretI found out today that building a website in secret is a very hard thing to do.  I have been trying to keep Jenn away from the room for the longest time this evening.  It is a good thing that my computer is down, but not 100% dead.  I am still able to make a few small changes here and there to the website.  I just added the website photo galleries and am attempting to get a fav icon to go in the upper corners.  And hooray for the Facebook and Linked in tracking thing.  It worked out great.  There are so many options out there for this wordpress program that I am having fun trying most of them out.  I find that the more popular ones are the best to use since they have been accepted by a great many people the bugs are all worked out.

My first thoughts on how I am going to propose…

by Jeff McNeil

Hotel Angeleno

Hotel Angeleno

So I have been thinking over the past 2 years about exactly how to propose to Jenn.  I have the following ideas:

It would start with a limo pickup of her friend Laura under the pre-text of a day of shopping and dinner/dancing paid for by my new promotion at work.  The limo will then pick up Jenn at the apartment and take the two of them to a shopping center. Which shopping center depends on what locations have all the stores to provide a completely new outfit for Jenn to be wearing when I propose that night at dinner.  I will provide a gift card to Laura with enough money to cover a new dress, shoes, hair/makeup and accessories for Jenn.  I will also give a little to Laura to enjoy the day and not just be a chaperon.  I am hoping to find a mall with a WhiteHouse/BlackMarket, nail and hair salon and Macy’s.  The girls will have all afternoon to get pretty and dressed up.  Jenn will think it is for a nice dinner and then going to a lounge/club in Hollywood to party.

West Restaurant & Lounge

West Restaurant & Lounge

The limo will take them to West a restaurant on the 17th floor of Hotel Angeleno in Los Angeles.  It is the round looking hotel next to the 405 freeway near the Getty Center.  I love the views from high floor restaurants.  There once was a restaurant called “Windows” at the top of the former Transamerica building in downtown Los Angeles that I loved to go to.  However now that restaurant has been converted into several top floor condos.  Other restaurants which were under consideration were Encounter at LAX (the alien looking building) and a steak house LA Prime on the top of the Los Angeles Bonaventure Hotel.  I chose West because of the view of the freeway and Westwood.  Jenn and Laura will meet me and Jenn’s mom Marge for dinner at West where I will propose as she arrives at the table.  We will all have a lovely dinner, talk, laugh and enjoy the view.

After dinner, Marge will drive Laura home and Jenn and I will stay at the Hotel Angeleno for the night and drive home in my car the next day.  Breakfast in bed, relaxing by the pool and being together on our first day of the rest of our lives together.  This is my plan, this is my hope and I hope to have it pulled together soon.

Permission: Check, Ring: Check, Plan: Pending

by Jeff McNeil

permissionWell this last Friday, April 30th, I asked Jenn’s mom Marge for permission to marry Jenn.  I was given a resounding yes.  It was a very awkward moment for me to be doing so.  I am sure it will feel better when I ask Jenn.  My heart will be pounding for sure at that moment.  Apparently over the weekend Jenn said that Marge couldn’t stop giving me enough praise.  I hope Marge keeps her secret.  I know her and Jenn talk on a daily basis, well more like an hourly basis.  So it will be interesting to see how long Marge can keep this under wraps.  I also need to move on to my next phase which is planning the event. I will be sure to write more about that later.  As for now, I am just glad I got the “A OK” from mom.  I feel that is the best way to do it since Jenn and her mother are so close.
